Pebble Beach Concours 2014 – Magnificent!

By: D. Brian Smith

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2014 was an epic event, just as every Pebble Beach Concours is. However, it was also a year of firsts for me. For starters, it was the first time that I ever covered the event without having my brother also in attendance as a participant.

What’s more, I was flying solo for the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours, since Monterey Car Week’s Chief Photographer, Ben Moment, was flying reconnaissance missions in Korea for the U.S. Army. Though I had more fun covering Pebble, Ben’s job was certainly more important.

This year’s Pebble was also strange considering the fact that Monterey Car Week didn’t get to the Pebble Beach Golf Resort before sunrise to witness the Concours cars and motorcycles being driven onto the golf links before the start of the show. We typically are some of the first media on hand for the event. But, this year I had to stay two hours away from Pebble, so I couldn’t make the drive out that early.

Never mind. Coming in after the start of the Concours made me appreciate that much more what a great job the Pebble Beach Concours staff does every year. I parked down on 17-mile drive and was promptly picked up by one of the many shuttle buses that took spectators throughout the day to the event. In fact, our shuttle bus driver could have another career as a stand-up comic. She was hilarious and entertained the entire bus with her funny anecdotes during the short drive to the golf links.

The 2014 Pebble Beach Concours also marks the first time in many years that an automobile from the 1950’s won Best of Show. A 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti Coupe, owned by Jon Shirley, of Medina, Washington took top honors.

Mind you, some things never change. Monterey Car Week will always post numerous photos from the Pebble Beach Concours. We will always do our best to make sure that we cover this world’s greatest automotive event every year. Even if I have to fly solo again next year I’ll do it. Of course, I hope that my brother will be here and Ben won’t be piloting any missions for the Army. Perhaps, if he puts in for leave right about now, the Army will let him take some time off to be at Pebble in 2015. Regardless, you may rest assured that I’ll be here.

Until then, enjoy all the cars and motorcycles that captured our fancy at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours. If you get the opportunity, make sure you come out to Pebble Beach for the 2015 Concours. As you can imagine, it’s even better in person.
