For the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, it was once again an early Sunday morning for exhibitors, participants and automotive journalists. Those of us who cover the show each year online or in print always need to play the game of getting to the Pebble Beach Golf Resort, where the event is held, before sun up. The objective is always the same. With a fair amount of professional camera gear that we’re lugging around, we always desire getting an almost unobtainable parking spot right at the resort. Somehow each year we seem to get lucky.
This year was no exception. Mind you, we won’t share our parking secrets here for fear that someone reading will grab our desired space in 2014. Suffice it to say that the Lotus Evora S press car that we piloted had the premium parking space that this sublime supercar deserves. We stowed our extra photography equipment in the sports car’s rear boot and made multiple trips to same for swapping lens and gear. Nice.
We were up well before sunrise and on our way to the big show in the sort of car that is at home in Pebble Beach, our 2013 Monterey Car Week Car, a 2013 Lotus Evora S. At first, we were directed to park in a lot that was near the Gooding & Co. auction area. One of the parking attendant’s asked to see our parking ticket. We had none, so the lot attendant said that we would be towed. There was no way that I was going to allow the Lotus Evora S press vehicle to be towed. So we got in the car and sought another parking space.
Ben and I managed to securely park the Evora S in the best spot imaginable apart from being in the Concours itself. We then made it down to the lawn in plenty of time to witness all of the automobiles and motorcycles in the show being driven onto the golf course to their designated exhibit locations.
As usual, there was a magnificent collection of vintage and exotic automobiles that paraded onto the course’s lush green fairway. For those who have attended the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours before but haven’t witnessed the vehicles being driven on the green at an early morning hour, you haven’t experienced the whole show, the best part of the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours.
In addition to seeing these spectacular autos under their own power, spectators can also see automotive luminaries and celebrities from all walks of life gathering at the early morning hour to appreciate these rare machines.
Of all the automotive events I’ve covered through the years, there’s no show like the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It’s pure magic, from the venue, to all the events leading up to the ultimate annual climax that is Pebble, to the people you meet and mingle with, to being able to cover it with my good friend and business partner, Ben Moment.
Still, there were two people missing from this year’s Pebble Beach Concours, my brother Kevin and my Dad. For these two reasons the2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance wasn’t my favorite car show ever. The Pebble Concours from previous years, when all three Smith men were together will have to hold that title.
Admittedly though, tooling around Carmel, Monterey and Pebble Beach in the 2013 Lotus Evora S was the perfect mode of automotive transport during Monterey Car Week. I felt like I was James Bond everywhere I went. When you’re in an exotic sports car, people give you second looks and certainly provide you preferential treatment. It’s the sort of vehicle that’s perfectly suited to being the Monterey Car Week Car and one we’d like to drive as an everyday automobile. Perhaps someday.
The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance for 2013 had all the mystique that it has had in years past as well as all the magic. We’ll be back next year. We hope to see you there too. Our thanks to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance for producing the greatest automotive event in the world and for providing the list of list of winners.
